Episode Summary

The Audience in Osaka
The episode begins in Osaka, where 18-year-old Aoteru Misumi seeks an audience with the Emperor of Yamato. To the shock of the entire imperial court, Aoteru does not ask for reinforcements to help the struggling Yamato forces at Fukui Reihoku Castle. Instead, he requests an Imperial Edict ordering a withdrawal.
Minister Taira, whose own son is among the isolated forces, is outraged. He accuses Aoteru of deception and calls for his immediate execution, arguing that a withdrawal would mean certain death for the 30,000 soldiers currently trapped in enemy territory.
The Master Plan: A Feigned Retreat
Aoteru reveals that the request for a withdrawal is actually a brilliant "Self-Injury Stratagem" designed by the dying strategist Yasuaki Kaku. The goal is a feigned retreat (the Shimazu style):
By using an Imperial Edict, the Seii forces will be convinced the retreat is genuine.
The Yamato army will lure the enemy into Ota, a basin surrounded by mountains.
Once inside, an ambush force will use remnants of the late "Japan era"—scrapped cars—to drop them from cliffs and crush the Seii army in a single stroke.
Political Stakes
Aoteru argues that sending reinforcements to the front lines would be a fatal mistake. It would leave the border of Buo (to the east) exposed, inviting a three-way war that would lead to national starvation and ruin. Quoting Sun Tzu, Aoteru explains that the highest form of skill is to "subdue the enemy without fighting." Impressed by Aoteru’s logic and courage, the Emperor defies Taira’s influence and grants the edict.
The Battle of Daishoji
As Aoteru and Yoshitsune rush back to Fukui, the Seii army, led by Ohga Wajima, begins a brutal assault on the isolated Nagamine forces at Daishoji. The Yamato soldiers are being pushed to their limits and are desperate to fight back.
The Cliffhanger
The episode ends at Fukui Reihoku Castle. As 12,000 enemy soldiers approach and the Yamato troops beg General Ryumon for the order to engage in battle, Aoteru arrives at the last possible second. He delivers the Emperor’s command: "Abandon the castle at once and withdraw!"
The stage is now set for the "Ota Scrapped Car Ambush," a desperate gamble that will determine the future of Yamato.
